A lake with lots of structure
The Westeinderplassen near Aalsmeer consist of the Grote Poel, the Kleine Poel and a maze of islands, ditches and reed beds on the east side — the old lilac fields. That variety is exactly what makes the water so interesting for predators: transitions from shallow to deep, shelter and places where baitfish gather are everywhere. From a boat you can reach all of that structure; from the bank most of it is inaccessible.

Types of spots
- Reed beds and island shores — the classic autumn pike spot. Fish parallel to the bank and watch for bays and points.
- Channels and deeper basins — as the water cools the fish move to the depths and their edges. Look for zander and bigger perch here, often vertically or with a lure fished slowly along the bottom.
- Ditches and narrow passages — sheltered in wind, often slightly warmer water and lots of small fish. Good for perch on drop shot or small shads.
- Small harbours, jetties and bridges — wood, posts and shade attract fish. Approach quietly and cut the engine for the last few metres.
- Windward shore — wind pushes food to the shore it blows onto; that's where the baitfish sit, and the predators with them. Fish the windward side when it's safe to do so.
By season
October–November: shallow and along the reeds, plenty of action on bigger shads and jerkbaits. December–February: slower and deeper; fish the transitions and channels, and allow for short days. March: closed season for pike — fish for perch and zander, and release any pike immediately. From 1 April until the last Saturday of May artificial lures larger than 2.5 cm are not allowed.
Safe and quiet
